Foot and Mouth Disease Research Centre, Lahore is a premier Institute working under the Livestock & Dairy Development Department, Punjab. The Centre was established in 1964 as a section of Veterinary Research Institute, Lahore on 23 acres of land having approximately 18776 Sq feet covered area. It was declared as an independent Centre Financially and Administratively in July, 2001. Foot & Mouth Disease Research Centre is the only Institute in the country which produces FMD vaccine and hyper immune serum. Started Cell culture vaccine Production on BHK-21 cell line at the centre since 1978. Currently, approximately 8 million doses of trivalent FMD Vaccine are being produced on stationary cell culture system per annum.
Objectives
The main objectives of the Centre are given below:
- Production of trivalent oil based Cell Culture Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccine
- Production of Hyper immune serum
- Diagnosis of Foot & Mouth Disease out breaks, Typing of virus isolates and matching of field isolates with vaccinal strains
- In service training / Internship of DVM students and para veterinary staff

* An amount of Rs. 09.00 Million was released through technical supplementary grant during the financial year 2017-18 vide Govt. of the Punjab order No. SO(B&E)/L&DD/XI-25/2014 dated 15.01.2018 to complete the remaining civil work
